This is what happens when you combine children's lit with some cutlery.

I promised everybody more Peter Pan art, and here it is. The contrast is fucked up (there are supposed to be three layers of lighting depth here, but i got LAZY), and while scanning it into the computer, i learned a few funny tricks that'll come in handy once i start producing actual comic pages...which'll be pretty be pretty soon, i think.

Anyway, that's Pete there in the middle, with Wendy behind him, Ace off to the left, Don't Ask fooling with a rope on the right, and a few dead pirates strewn about the clearing. It does not pay to piss Pete & the boys off when you're on their turf.

Something about this - I think both the faces and the vivid detail - reminds me of Finder.

Excellent work - really absorbing!

Yeah, i think that i tend to over-simplify faces in ling shots though - i actually sketch in pretty detailed facial expressions, but then i pull back and think "fuck, man, nobody's gonna be able to tell what the hell is going on with that much detail!", and so i revert to the simple slash n' dot faces above. I'll get over it, though. Hmmf.

And yeah, Carla's work...i dunno. I see a lot of influences in HER work - one of the chief ones being Evan Dorkin, who god knows influenced me eighteen ways to Sunday - so yeah, the cross-pollination of styles is inevitable. ;)

it not so....nevernever land-ish, i would say. but hey random graphic violence, I'm always in the mood for.

Peter got grown up fast i guess. Wonderful work!

Nah, it's not so magical - at least not the fighting that goes on in the island.

When you've got two groups of lonely males beating the shit out of each other for 60 years, things are gonna get pretty brutal - even in a fantasy-land where kids can fly and clocks run backwards.

Freaking awesome. Oh god, the detail... I love the bold lines between the layers of lighting depth (yes, I can tell they're there).

I cannot wait to see the comic.

[info]mudron

September 16 2003, 13:00:10 UTC 8 years ago

Thanks, man - but you can see the details a little better in this coloring-book-version of the page.

I think that i'm gonna plop myself down sometimes this week (or the next) and finally teach myself how to use layers in Photoshop - that way i can break down a drawing like this into different lighting planes and then slap it all back together again for a more cohesive picture.

can I have a photocopy of this to stick on my wall? Pretty please?

Re: daaay-um.

Oh, hell yes. To the person who gave me copies of both Hero and Amzing Magic Card Tricks!, my soul is yours.

(And hey, do you have a coy of Hero on DVD yet? As swank as it is on a computer screen, it kicks major elephant-ass in widescreen surround sound. Daaay-um, indeed.)

Wow.

I'm wicked jealous. I wish I had Half your talent.

You think about submitting this to Graphic Smash, or you want to do it on your own?

[info]mudron

September 16 2003, 23:06:16 UTC 8 years ago

I was thinking about handing it over sometime to Graphic Smash (if they'd have it), but i want to keep the comic free for a good long while.

Part of that is because i'm still just starting out, so i hate to charge people to see my work, and also, the updating schedule for the comic is going to be pretty irregular once it launches this winter...

Mr. Mudron = my new folk hero

Jesus, Bill, you had already won my heart. Now you've won my heart and a little bit of my spleen and esophogus. (The good bits, I promise.)

I've mentioned that I burn to see this with the fire of a thousand suns before, but it bears repeating: I burn to see this with the fire of a thousand suns.

Re: Mr. Mudron = my new folk hero

I hope you like the comic when it launches, then. Hell, i hope EVERYBODY likes the comic when it launches.

That being said, though...don't actually expect to see Peter tusselling with the pirates for a looooong time yet. I've got to get Peter to the island first. ;)

Dead, disembowled pirates and happy looking little songbirds...Something about that just has endless amounts of appeal. I absolutely love the style- behold the power of graphite!

September 16 2003, 15:25:48 UTC 8 years ago

oh....my....god
Your shading
Its...the most perfect thing i've ever seen.
All self taught or is there some possible way i can learn technique like that?

[info]mudron

September 16 2003, 23:01:07 UTC 8 years ago

Yes, copy as many black and white Mapplethorpe photos as you can! Then the art of subtle-shading shall be yours to command as you conquer and smash the denizens of the "inter-web"!

Seriously, though, that shading style is both self-taught, and rusty as hell right now. I've got to learn to wrangle my field contrasts in again. Shit.

I'll get better, though. I swear my blackened heart upon it.

Why didn't i ever enroll in your school?

Passersby were amazed by the unusually large amounts of blood.

That looks... how you say... painful.

So where does Tinkerbell figure in to all this? Or is this the universe of DARK Tinkerbell, complete with glowing red eyes and shurikens?

[info]mudron

September 16 2003, 22:52:15 UTC 8 years ago

Re: Passersby were amazed by the unusually large amounts of blood.

Oh, Tink's just about the same character she's always been, just maybe a bit more jealous and funnier now. I think she was running about, screwing a wood nypmh when this battle occured, though. I dunno. These characters are all retarded.

I want Ace's top-hat. But then, I want any top-hat.

...curious: the line about 'two lonely groups of men beating the shit out of each other for sixty years...' Can I take this to mean the lines of black and white, good and evil, that were always fairly clearly defined in Barrie's Pan will be blurring a bit, and we'll be seeing the people amongst the pirates a bit as well, seeing both groups for the dysfunctional yet amazingly fascinating buckos they are...?

...cuz if so... I have to, like, sex you or something. At least fall at your feet in worship.

*coughs discreetly, flees thread*

(Um, lovely art by the way. Sickening.)

[info]mudron

September 17 2003, 04:09:18 UTC 8 years ago

Sex? Sex is GOOD.

Let's put it this way: both the Lost Boys and the pirates are fucked up, in much the same way that the morons who're involved in gangs are stupid, because they're all stuck in a cycle of violence none of them can escape from.

We'll be seeing more about the pirates - and where they came from - than any other telling of the Pan legend so far...

Can't add much to what the others have already said. Nice piece, for darn sure.

Can't help thinking, though, that Mr. Axe-in-the-face got off easy compared to the fellow dangling from the tree...

WOOOT

Hot DAMN, man, your whole house must be gray! I, too, am a graphite fan--but you're takin' it to a whole 'nother level. It's OUT OF CONTROL.

My one thing is that it took me a minute to figure out what in blazes was dangling from the tree. Aside from that, though, you have my total worship/slavebond for life.

I'll be heading back to the plantation now.
